If you have never made your own natural deodorant before, you are about to find out how simple, cheap and effective it is!
I used to wear antiperspirants for years, it was the ‘normal’ thing to do that everyone did but when I started delving into natural health and learnt how bad it was, being full of aluminium, parabens, synthetic perfumes (and many other chemicals), prevents us from perspiring and not to mention, it can cause breast cancer, I went cold turkey. Well, not completely but I did throw it away and spent many months trying to find a natural alternative that works. This became quite expensive though so the next best thing was to try make it myself and that way I can customise the smell and control exactly what goes into it!
What I love about this recipe is that it’s super simple, cheap to make and you can adjust it for your climate! If you live in a warmer climate, you may want to use more firmer oils like beeswax or cacao butter.
Dry Ingredients:
2 Tbsp Arrow root or cornstarch powder
1 Tbsp Bentonite clay
1Tbsp baking soda
1/2 Tsp Zinc (optional)
Wet Ingredients:
2 Tbsp Coconut oil
1 Tbsp Beeswax, more if in warmer climate (or cacao butter)
1 Tbsp Shea butter (or cacao butter to simplify)
20 drops essential oil
Method:
1. Melt the solid oils over a double boiler
2. Combine and mix together dry ingredients
3. Combine the oils and dry ingredients together and mix until smooth.
4. Mix the essential oils in (I like a citrus blend of wild orange and grapefruit or a calming blend of lavender and bergamot)
5. Pour into a jar or an old, cleaned deodorant stick or glue stick and allow to cool.
6. I place mine in the fridge to solidify further over night
Recipe note: If you are sensitive to baking soda, you can reduce the amount. This recipe is so versatile, you can customise it to how you desire!
