Oil Pulling Benefits and Recipe

Ayurvedic medicine is one of the oldest medical systems in the world and oil pulling, the technique of swishing oil around your mouth is a proven and honoured method used within Ayurveda to remove bacteria, promote healthy teeth and gums and it is also one of the best ways to naturally whiten your teeth!




Traditionally, it is believed that a healthy mind, body and spirit begins with a healthy mouth which influences good digestion. Good digestion is essential for good health both physically and mentally which is why oil pulling is so powerful for not only oral health but our entire health.

Our mouths and teeth are home to many different bacteria, germs, pathogens and viruses which can cause oral issues, inflammation and many other diseases. The swishing of oil around your teeth and gums for 5-20 minutes and then spitting out the oil removes fat-soluble toxins and bacteria, creating a clean oral environment that can prevent bad breath, tooth decay, cavities, gum infections and gingivitis. Recent studies have also found the benefits go far beyond just oral health and may also reduce acne, inflammation and throat dryness.

The correct technique of oil pulling:

1. First thing in the morning before you brush your teeth, place 1tbsp of oil (see recipe below) into your mouth and swish around and between your teeth for 5-20 minutes (make sure you don’t swallow it as it contains bacteria and toxins)


2. Spit out the oil in the bin (not down the drain as it will block drains up) then rinse your mouth with water.

Note: you can use oils such as coconut, sesame, olive oil or a blend. I personally use coconut oil and add essential oils to maximise the benefits and it also leaves your breath minty and fresh!

Recipe:

Heat and melt around ¼- ½ extra virgin coconut oil over the stove. Once melted, cool slightly and add roughly 10 drops of essential oils (I add peppermint). Pour the oil into ice cube trays but only fill about half-way depending on the size and then place in the fridge to firm. If you find it is too big, once firmed you can just cut the cubes in half.

Each morning, grab 1 cube or half a cube and swish around your mouth for 5-20minutes.
